Apprenticeship Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I apply?

The application can be filled out electronically but must be printed and mailed or hand-delivered to:

2. What are Facilities Management’s functions and responsibilities?
Facilities Management creates and manages the physical campus environment. Click HERE to visit the Facilities Management website.

3. Where will I work?
Work is performed at the Morgantown campus of West Virginia University.

4. Who can apply for this program?
Application may be made by anyone at least 18 years of age who possesses a high school diploma or GED and a valid driver’s license. Applicants are not required to have any general trade skills or previous experience; an aptitude test will be given to determine the appropriate trade skill most beneficial to the candidate.

5. What are the work hours?
Facilities Management typically works a 7.5 hour shift from 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM. During the apprenticeship program, the hours will vary to accommodate training and other program requirements.

6. Will I be required to supply my own tools?
Tools and safety equipment will be provided; however, each apprentice will supply his/her own work clothes and boots.

7. How will I process through the program?
As an apprentice, you will be expected to acquire on-the-job training and classroom instruction. Your time as an apprentice will require you to be constantly learning and perfecting new tasks and taking on new duties. Once you have satisfactorily completed all the necessary requirements for your current level of apprenticeship, your job will be reviewed and moved to the next level of apprentice.

8. Will I be paid for classroom instruction?
Yes, you will be paid for time spent in the classroom. You will be provided with work release or flex time to attend classes. However, you will be expected to cover the cost of travel to and from classes unless otherwise noted.

9. Where will the classes be held?
Many of the classes will be held in one of our computer labs within our Facilities Management building. Classes will also be held at Monongalia County Technical Education Center (MTEC) in Morgantown.

10. How long does the program last?
If all training and classes are successfully completed as offered, the program is designed to last four years.

11. Will I be required to take any tests?
The selection process involves the administration of an aptitude test. Tests are also administered throughout the duration of the required class work.

12. Will I work in the same shop for the full term of the program?
Some of the job training requirements or operational need may require the apprentice to work in another area.

13. Will I be eligible for benefits as an apprentice?
